This letter, dated November 16, 1863, is from S.F. Chalfin, Assistant Adjutant General, to Col. E.B. Alexander, Acting Assistant Provost Marshal General of Missouri. Writing from the War Department in Washington, D.C., Chalfin informs Alexander that when a Deputy or "Special Agent" is sent in pursuit of military deserters, his transportation expenses will be paid, whether or not he is successful in apprehending the deserters.

These are General Orders from the Headquarters of the Recruiting Service of Missouri Volunteers at the Office of the Acting Provost Marshal General for Missouri. They instruct all District Provost Marshals of Missouri to submit weekly reports of the number of recruits enlisted in their districts, and to provide transportation for recruits. They also instruct Enrolling Officers to make weekly reports and to bring their recruits to the Surgeon of the Board of Enrollment for examination. The orders are dated November 23, 1863 and signed by E.G. Bush, Captain of the 10th U.S. Infantry.

This is a copy of two telegrams from James B. Fry to Col. E.B. Alexander, Acting Assistant Provost Marshal General of Missouri. In the first dispatch, Fry instructs Alexander to ensure that all Provost Marshals in Missouri report the names, pay rates, and dates of service of their Enrolling Officers. In the second dispatch, he tells Alexander to have his Provost Marshals report the number of volunteers recruited in their districts. Both telegrams are dated November 21, 1863.

This letter, dated November 7, 1863, is from James B. Fry, Provost Marshal General, to Col. E.B. Alexander, Acting Assistant Provost Marshal General of Missouri. Writing from the War Department in Washington, D.C., Fry tells Alexander the number of volunteers that must be recruited from each Missouri district. To comply with President Lincoln's October 17 proclamation ordering the United States to recruit 300,000 volunteers, the state of Missouri must recruit 13,516 volunteers.
