Description: This letter, dated October 9, 1863 is from James M. Boyer, Deputy Provost Marshal of Chariton County, Missouri, to Capt. A. Comingo, Provost Marshal of the 6th district of Missouri. Boyer asks Comingo for information about the proper procedure for discharging soldiers. He also reports that Jefferson J. Shaw of Chariton County was discharged from his regiment despite being fit and wanting to remain in the service. "It does seem to me," Boyer writes, "that there is a screw loose somewhere."

Description: On August 29, 1864, James Beatty, Deputy Provost Marshal for the 20th Missouri subdistrict, writes from Milan, Missouri to Capt. William Fowler, Provost Marshal for the 7th District of Missouri, in St. Joseph, Missouri. Beatty reports that Wesley Griffith of Taylor, Missouri claims that the township is "entitled to many more credits for soldiers furnished" than appear in the draft documents. Beatty also states that he sent a soldier back to his regiment because his sick furlough had expired.

Description: This letter, dated October 1, 1863, is from James M. Boyer, Deputy Provost Marshal of Chariton County, Missouri, to Capt. A. Comingo, Provost Marshal of the 6th district of Missouri. Boyer writes to Comingo regarding the apprehension of several military deserters. Attached to the document is a note from Brig. Gen. O. Guitar, the commanding officer of two of the deserters, along with correspondence between Col. E.B. Alexander and Asst. Adj. Gen. J.A. Campbell.

Alexander instructs Comingo that "the Consolidated Lists should be forwarded to the Provost Marshal General at Washington, as prepared and other names as added."

In his response on the other side of the document, erroneously dated November 18, 1863, McGee states that he has only one squadron on duty at his post and cannot provide an escort.

Description: On December 24, 1864, Capt. J.A. Ewing, 14th Mo. Cav. Vols., writes from St. Louis to the Provost Marshal, 7th District Missouri. Ewing states that he has a muster roll from February 1864 crediting certain men of the 7th District. He inquires if these men have already been credited, and whether they are owed any bounties, for they "have never been paid since they reenlisted and are very much in need of money."

Description: This letter, dated November 23, 1863, is from P. McClanahan in Independence, Missouri to Capt. A. Comingo, Provost Marshal of the 6th district of Missouri. McClanahan writes that Gen. Ewing has ordered citizens to return to their homes, but "no one with any sense or discretion would accept . . . in my opinion this last order is no better than the famous Order No 11." He also tells Comingo that Red Crenshaw's house was burned down.

Description: This letter, dated October 4, 1863, is from C.F. Smith, Enrolling Officer in Jackson County, Missouri, to Capt. A. Comingo, Provost Marshal of the 6th district of Missouri. Smith states that he is enclosing his latest military rolls. He tells Comingo he has had difficulty enlisting men, due to dangerous conditions and the "unsettled state of the country."

Title: General Orders, No. 1
Description: These are General Orders from the Headquarters of the Recruiting Service of Missouri Volunteers at the Office of the Acting Provost Marshal General for Missouri. They instruct all District Provost Marshals of Missouri to submit weekly reports of the number of recruits enlisted in their districts, and to provide transportation for recruits. They also instruct Enrolling Officers to make weekly reports and to bring their recruits to the Surgeon of the Board of Enrollment for examination. The orders are dated November 23, 1863 and signed by E.G. Bush, Captain of the 10th U.S. Infantry.

Description: This dispatch, dated October 21, 1863, is from U.S. Army Capt. H.C. Wood to Capt. J.F. Benjamin, Provost Marshal of the 8th district of Missouri. Wood writes from the Provost Marshal General's Bureau in Washington, D.C. He tells Benjamin that his recent printing expenses will be reimbursed, but that in the future he must not incur expenses without prior approval from the Provost Marshal General or Col. Alexander, Acting Assistant Provost Marshal General of Missouri.

Description: On December 15, 1863, Capt. P. Naughton, 10th Missouri Cavalry, writes from the Recruiting Station in St. Louis to Capt. A. Comingo, Provost Marshal for the 6th District of Missouri. Naughton states that he has been authorized by Col. Alexander to ask Comingo to "enlist all those men who would like to join my regiment, and furnish them Transportation here."
