He says that the two officers have not been as productive as they would have been "in ordinary times" and adds, "you are aware of the difficulties under which we labor in this county."

Description: On December 24, 1864, Capt. J.A. Ewing, 14th Mo. Cav. Vols., writes from St. Louis to the Provost Marshal, 7th District Missouri. Ewing states that he has a muster roll from February 1864 crediting certain men of the 7th District. He inquires if these men have already been credited, and whether they are owed any bounties, for they "have never been paid since they reenlisted and are very much in need of money."

Description: This is Martha A. Barker’s application for compensation from the United States government for the military service of her slave, Henry Lewis. Title: General Orders, No. 1
Description: These are General Orders from the Headquarters of the Recruiting Service of Missouri Volunteers at the Office of the Acting Provost Marshal General for Missouri. They instruct all District Provost Marshals of Missouri to submit weekly reports of the number of recruits enlisted in their districts, and to provide transportation for recruits. They also instruct Enrolling Officers to make weekly reports and to bring their recruits to the Surgeon of the Board of Enrollment for examination. The orders are dated November 23, 1863 and signed by E.G. Bush, Captain of the 10th U.S. Infantry.

Description: On August 7, 1863, Col. E.B. Alexander, Acting Assistant Provost Marshal General in St. Louis, writes to Capt. William Fowler, Provost Marshal for the 7th District of Missouri, in St. Joseph, Missouri. Alexander copies the text of a communication he received from the Provost Marshal General, stating that Deputy Provost Marshals are not in the U.S. service and are therefore eligible for the draft.
