Attached is a January 22, 1946 letter from Bertha E. Booth of Caldwell County to Mr. Shoemaker. Description: This document, ca. 1861-1865, provides a list of “radicals in this District.” Each of the 22 “radicals” is identified by name, town, and county; most are from Andrew County, Missouri. A note on the reverse states “There are some others but don’t know their address.”

Description: This document declares the sale of four slaves—Ritter, Bird, Fanny, and John—to Stephen Bedford for $182.50. It was signed and dated by Marion M. Biggerstaff of Clinton County, Missouri on July 5, 1857.

A note in pencil on the second page indicates that the application was rejected. Also included is a signed statement that Slemons lawfully purchased another slave, Nat.

Description: This is James W. Crow's 1866 Oath of Loyalty to the United States. Crow, a 34-year-old native of Clinton County, Missouri, states that he was required to give bond during the war: "I was enrolled disloyal against my wishes I claimed to be loyal at the time." The oath is No. 236 in a bound volume.

Description: This military roll, ca. 1863-1864, lists the names of "colored recruits" enlisted in the 6th congressional district of Missouri. The soldiers were recruited from Ray, Andrew, Clinton, Lafayette, Pettis, and Saline Counties. The document includes the names of the soldiers' owners and the months of their enlistment.
