This letter is from Daniel L. Chandler to John Stillman Brown. Chandler writes from West Point and Kansas City, Missouri, and Mapleton, Kansas on September 25 and 28, and October 1 and 6, 1861. Chandler, a steward at a military hospital, describes caring for soldiers wounded in the Battle of Dry Creek and the Sacking of Osceola. Chandler shares his fears about the future: "The condition of the State of Missouri is indeed most gloomy, and if the war continues a year longer the territory will be turned into a desert."

He responds to her complaints about Copperheads: "If you could only send them out here we would make them keep quiet." He adds that there has been an increase in guerrilla activity near the Kansas-Missouri border, and that the people of Kansas are preparing to defend themselves against attack.

This is John R. Hall's Oath of Loyalty to the United States. Hall, a 61-year-old resident of Liberty, Missouri, states that he was born in Kentucky and that he thought General Sterlin Price "ought to have been arrested by Fremont" after the capture of General Mulligan at the First Battle of Lexington. The oath, labeled No. 106 in a bound volume, was signed by Hall on October 6, 1866.

This November 1861 document certifies that Major R.T. Van Horn was released after being a prisoner of war. He had been taken prisoner by the Missouri State Guard at the First Battle of Lexington on September 20, 1861, and was released in accordance with an agreement made between Maj. Gen. John C. Fremont and Maj. Gen. Sterling Price. The certificate is signed by Price and by D. Robert Barclay, Commissioner.
