After hearing of Missouri State Guard recruitment activities in Dayton, Missouri, Union Colonel Charles R. Jennison sends the 7th Kansas Cavalry, under the leadership of Daniel R. Anthony, to the town. The attack leaves nearly every home in Dayton and nearby Rose Hill destroyed and contributes to the reputation of the 7th Kansas Cavalry: “Jennison's Jayhawkers."
