At the National Archives location in Kansas City you can see original historical documents, photographs, maps, drawings, artifacts and much more, collected from the field offices of nearly 100 Federal agencies in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska. By law, we preserve and provide access to permanently valuable non-current Federal records with historical, legal, or fiscal value.
Our records are diverse in form and content, including correspondence, name lists, reports, contracts, case files, and posters which document the actions and reactions of the Government and the American people as they dealt with issues such as immigration and naturalization, environment, technological change, the Great Depression, war, and the evolution of a multicultural nation. Researchers most often request Leavenworth Penitentiary inmate files, Alien Files (A-Files), naturalization records, Federal court records, Federal land records, and Bureau of Indian Affairs records.
Two public research areas are available – the research room, for use of original documents from our holdings, and the computer search room for use of online genealogy resources and microfilmed materials.
