Description: This letter, dated September 3, 1863, is from Kansas Gov. Thomas A. Carney in Leavenworth, Kansas to Maj. Gen. J.M. Schofield, Commanding Department of the Missouri. Carney declares his intent to avenge Quantrill's Raid on Lawrence. He tells Schofield that on September 9, "the doers of these bloody deeds, their aiders and abettors, shall be steadily pursued and surely punished." He thanks Schofield for sending arms to help citizens defend themselves against future raids, and he offers to "place the military of the State at your disposal."
